Before you start
- Wait until all trades are finished and heavy debris is removed
- Replace or clean the furnace filter: renovation dust clogs it fast
- Wear a dust mask and open windows if the weather allows
Work top to bottom
- Ceiling fans, light fixtures and the tops of door frames first
- Then walls, ledges, trim and window sills
- Then cabinets, inside and out
- Floors last
Capture dust, don't spread it
Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and microfibre cloths. Dry dusting pushes fine dust into the air, where it settles again an hour later. Plan on at least two passes.
Don't forget
- Vent covers and cold-air returns
- Inside drawers and new cabinets
- Light paint and adhesive spots on fixtures
- Window tracks and door tracks
- Baseboards and outlet covers
